they're at the president obama white house almost every week meeting with president obama. and i unde t a i underst what ab the f all this face time with president. does t i we're tol elizabe mas sea committ them on board with his agenda, particularly for his side of the negotiations with congressional republicans over the bush tax cuts and the stimulus and the deficit. this president seems to have a thick skin if letting bygones be bygones does not come naturally to him as a man, he is doing a convincing job as a president. from the friendly response from the business leaders after these meetings, even from the ones who supported mitt romney. it does not seem like the president is calling these business leaders to the white house to read them the riot act. it does not seem like he is trying to exact political revenge. it seal like he is trying to get them on board with his agenda, particularly for his side of the negotiations with congressional republicans over the bush tax cuts and the stimulus and the deficit. this president seems to have a thick skin if letting bygones be bygones do

in a long line of efforts on the part of the obama white house to organize americans, to bring a grassroots campaign style efforts to bear on a policy debate. this not the first time the obama administration has done this. in fact, this isn't even a new thing for president's broadly speaking. president obama did not invent this strategy of trying to get his way on policy. remember george w. bush after he was reelected. george w. bush took off an a tour of the country at the start of his second term. what president bush was barn storming the country with to call americans to action about was his idea we should privatize social security. >> i like going around the country. i am going to keep telling people we've got a problem until it sinks in. >> it did not sink in and we did not turn social security over to wall street the way president bush suggested. that is less a caution for the current president, that president's broadly speaking shouldn't try to involve their public in their policy causes. it seems less a caution for president's broadly speaking on trying to do that than it is a speci

're at the president obama white house almost every week meeting with president obama. and i understand that he wants them to help him get his general accomplished. i understand that. what about the other direction? the fact that they're getting all this face time with the president. does that mean they're getting their agenda, too? well, you can judge for yourself in small ways. we're told that a senator elizabeth warren of massachusetts is about to get a seat on the senate banking committee. it's not official yet but one aide says it is, quote, likely. this of course has the banking world, the financial industry in a tissy. this is not what they wanted. they did not want a new sheriff on wall street. one democratic aide describing them as, quote, going nuts over this. but going nuts does not necessarily mean you get what you want. especially not when the horse you bet on so boldly lost so badly. it also means that working goat some things doesn't mean you have to work together on everything. and it also means that elections have consequences. now it's time for "the last word" with lawrence o'donnel

at the pentagon is former republican senator chuck hagel who met with president obama at the white house this week. as for hillary clinton's position at the state department, the national journal reports that president obama is, quote, genuinely conflicted over whether to pick kerry or united nations ambassador susan rice. president obama said yesterday that republican attacks against susan rice will not influence his decision. jo ari, what do you make of the chuck hagel situation with his name floating into the mix now? >> i thinkç it's a good faith efforts to take in a wide range of views. we know that president obama in his first term, obviously, went with secretary gates despite his ties to republican foreign policy. hagel is more of a progressive voice, but i'm not sure that a second-term obama presidency reaches back to another republican defense figure. >> and as to the john kerry/susan rice dilemma that the president faces, he says that the attacks on susan rice won't affect his decision one way or another. it won't force his hand to nominate her, and it won't affect his decision to go w

on this issue of taxes. the white house saying president obama is saying rates should go up on those making $250,000 or more. these are two starting proposals. the white house has put their proposal out last week. it really drew a hard line, calls for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue, most of that coming from increasing taxes on wealthier americans, but this republican plan very different, does not call for increasing taxes on wealthier americans. president also wants to end congressional oversight of the debt limit. there's no such offer in the republican plan. in fact, some aides have told me that that is a pipe dream. so these two sides still very far apart. now, tonight, martin, the white house will be inviting members of congress here for the holiday party. house speaker john boehner will be here as well. there have been a lot of questions about whether these two will run into each other, whether they will talk about the fiscal cliff. no one is signaling what they might discuss, but house speaker john boehner when asked about tonight's event said that he thinks he might run into the preside

in the white house when president obama signed the executive order to close guantanamo, even before he did that, california senator dianne feinstein, chair of the intelligence committee, had already requested a thorough government report on how logistically prisoners could be moved from guantanamo to american prisons. in 2008, remember, yes, barack obama was running for president saying he wanted to close guantanamo, but the guy he was running against, john mccain, was also saying that he wanted to close guantanamo. and, frankly, the guy who was president at the time, the guy who opened guantanamo, george w. bush, was also saying at the time that we needed to close guantanamo. so everybody sort of agreed and dianne feinstein apparently said, hey, if everybody agrees that that must be done, let's start looking into how we are going to do it. that report requested by senator dianne feinstein from the government accountability office in 2008 has just come out. and it explains the duh is silent that, yeah, people convicted of terrorism offenses are already safely held in american prisons. a lot of
